Over the past few months, the UK has saved leftovers, written detailed shopping lists containing only what we need, and baked a LOT of banana bread. As life is beginning to get busier, the team at Love Food Hate Waste are on a mission to help us to ‘Keep Crushing It’ and reduce food waste for good.
We hate waste!
Taking care of the food we produce at Cranswick is Second Nature. We’re aiming to be a zero edible waste food producer and hope to achieve this by 2030 (which we are well on our way with) and we also want to help fight hunger and are working with food charities to redistribute any surplus edible food which we can’t sell.
How food waste is connected to the climate
Over 4.5 million tonnes of edible food is wasted in UK homes every year. If we can cut this waste, we not only save cash, we protect our planet too. When we waste food, we also waste all the energy and water it takes to grow, harvest, transport, and package it. And if food goes to the landfill and rots, it produces methane—a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide. About 11% of all the greenhouse gas emissions that come from the food system could be reduced if we stop wasting food.
What can we do?
In lockdown, we all found ways to make our food go further, which helps us save time, money and the planet. Keep up the good work and find tips and tricks over at Love Food Hate Waste to make the most of what’s in your cupboards, fridge and freezer.
