Katsouris Brothers Ltd, who joined Cranswick PLC in 2019, has achieved the PAS 2060 Carbon Neutral standard for their Wembley production site. The certification validates the site's carbon neutral status and approves a plan to reduce emissions further and achieve Net Zero by 2040.
Katsouris Brothers Ltd is a leading supplier of Mediterranean foods and joined the Cranswick portfolio in 2019. In doing so, it also joined in Cranswick’s pledge that all its manufacturing sites will become Carbon Neutral this year. The PAS 2060 carbon neutral accreditation confirms the Katsouris Brothers Wembley site to have robustly identified, measured, and minimised its carbon impact, with verified offsets in place to balance out its remaining emissions. Senior leaders have completed CPD-accredited climate literacy training, and the site benefits from an experienced and long-serving colleague community that have stepped up to the sustainability challenge. The PAS 2060 standard also approves the site team's plans to further decarbonise operations and achieve Net Zero status by 2040.
REDUCING CARBON TO DATE
Since its acquisition in 2019, the site team have made a detailed evaluation of their Scope 1 and 2 emissions to identify decarbonisation opportunities across the business.
This Katsouris production site begins its decarbonisation journey from a position of strength, with a modest base-level of emissions. The main reduction initiative implemented in the measured period is an LED lighting upgrade to decrease electricity consumption. The Water Road site is entirely switched over and The Queensbury Road site nearing completion.
Since its 2017 baseline, the site has decreased its emission intensity (emissions per unit of production). However, due to increased production in 2020-2021, there has been a 3% net increase in emissions, driven by increased resources used in production and deliveries.
Despite the net increase in carbon emissions in the measured period, the site maintains a low emissions intensity and has a solid foundation to reduce emissions moving forward.

The site carbon emissions yet to be eliminated are offset by investment into a clean energy project in India. This initiative has been selected by site colleagues to neutralise the site's carbon impact and deliver wider environmental and community benefits. The project is verified by Verra and Gold Standard and directly aligns with specific United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Wind Energy Project, Maharashtra, India
This project generates a clean form of electricity through renewable wind energy while establishing sustainable livelihood opportunities servicing the wind farm. The project envisages the implementation of 97 turbines in the Maharashtra state of India with a total project capacity of 199.7 MW. The green electricity generated will be exported to the NEWNE electricity grid, displacing an equivalent amount of electricity that would otherwise have been generated by fossil fuels. There will also be a marginal contribution to reducing the energy demand-supply gap in the state of Rajasthan and Gujarat.
WHAT’S NEXT?
The Katsouris Brother’s team will continue to integrate sustainable practices across their operations. The immediate focus addresses the site's most significant impact area of F gas.
Future projects include reducing emissions from leaks by switching to a lower emission refrigerant. This upgrade has the potential to drive F gas impact down to zero.
The site adheres to Cranswick’s group-wide target to reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2025 and commits to achieve net zero emissions by 2040.
