Cranswick Celebrates Achieving BBFAW Tier One Ranking for Second Consecutive Year

We are pleased to have been awarded the highest benchmark level in the global Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare (BBFAW) for the second consecutive year, cementing our position as a global leader in the sector. Cranswick was not just the only meat processor but the only producer to be listed in the top ‘leadership’ Tier 1, which was otherwise granted to giants of the retail sector such as Co-Op Group (Switzerland), Marks and Spencer, Migros and Waitrose.

Now in it’s sixth year, the Benchmark, which is created in collaboration with Compassion in World Farming, World Animal Protection and investment firm Coller Capital, ranked 110 companies worldwide, across six categories, looking at opportunities, risks, management and reporting on farm animal welfare.

It is our belief that better welfare can lead to better farm efficiency. Retaining the Tier One level for the second consecutive year is also demonstrative of our sustained commitment to animal welfare and a greener outlook on meat production, not just in our UK supply chain, but globally and ongoing we will continue to make further improvements.

The award comes after we launched our Second Nature group sustainability initiative earlier this month, which contained major environmental and community pledges and set a precedent on how businesses tackle issues around sustainability. As part of Second Nature, we have committed to becoming a zero-food waste business by 2030, to work in partnership with Courtauld 2025, to achieve 100% recyclable packaging by 2025 and to move to 100% renewable electricity from 1st March this year.

The BBFAW said “Cranswick demonstrates a strong commitment to animal welfare across its own operations and throughout its supply chain in the UK and globally”.
