Case Study: Delivering Champions 12.3

Cranswick Convenience Foods, Milton Keynes is our flagship Waste To Zero Champions 12.3 site.

FOOD WASTE AND LOSS MAPPING:

The team began by mapping where and how food waste was occurring with a root cause analysis at key production points, using the World Resource Institute (WRI) Food Loss and Waste Protocol as their reference.

WHAT WE DISCOVERED:

It was discovered that over two-thirds of our food loss and waste within the Protocol scope was avoidable. This was mainly due to human error, type of process used or equipment failure.

PROGRESS SO FAR:

  • The site is aiming to achieve zero edible food waste status to deliver against the group commitment of a 50% waste reduction by 2030. To date, the site has achieved week on week improvements and is currently within 5% of achieving the 2030 target, well ahead of schedule.

  • The site also now ensures 100% of surplus product is redistributed to local community groups in need via their partnership with Plan Zheroes, an online redistribution platform.

The impressive level of results that the Milton Keynes team has delivered provided the motivation for Second Nature which set a new manufacturing standard in food waste prevention.
